Wright Profemur Z Hip Replacement Lawsuits

Wright Profemur Z – Another Problematic Hip Implant

While the DePuy Hip replacement recall has been getting the most press, and involved the largest number of cases, there are other brands of hip implants that have caused problems.

Zimmer and Stryker hip replacement problems are two I’ve written about on this site, but they are not the only ones…

The Australian Connection

Wright Profemur Z has not gotten much press in this country yet. And since the U.S. doesn’t have a registry for hip replacements, it took the registry in Australia to alert the U.S. to the failure rate of the Wright Profemur Z.

The Australian Orthopedic Association found that the failure rate within three years was 11.2%! This means that more than 10 percent of the patients who had received a Wright Profemur implant had to have additional surgery to have their artificial hip replaced.

Wright Profemur Z vs DePuy ASR Hip Replacement

Just by way of comparison – the DePuy ASR hip replacement had a failure rate of 13% – within the first five years after having been implanted. That’s very bad, considering that hip implants are supposed to last at least 15 to 20 years, and preferably the rest of the patient’s life.

But the Wright Profemur Z rate is even worse. There are no numbers that I could find about what their rate is after five years, but with 11.2% after only 3 years, chances are that their failure rate exceeds the DePuy rate.

How could something like that happen?

Here’s something else DePuy and Wright Profemur have in common:

Both of them have bypassed the clinical trial phase by arguing that they were basically similar to other implants that were already on the market.

Interestingly enough, the Profemur had components, i.e., “flexible” components, that were supposed to be innovative and superior to the other options. Yet it turned out that the flexible component was the cause of much of the trouble – it wasn’t strong enough to withstand normal use.

Do YOU or Someone you love (or know) have a Wright Profemur implant?

What should you do if you or someone you know has a Wright Profemur implant, whether or not you already have problems?

You should definitely be monitored closely by your medical team. And you should seek out legal advice as well.

For starters, you should know about your options…

The problem is that it’s easy to make mistakes that can potentially ruin your chances of getting compensation for the injuries inflicted by your hip replacement. These mistakes include not taking action soon enough – which can lead to problems with the statute of limitations, which might expire before you have a chance to file.

And once it’s expired, there’s nothing even the best attorney can do for you.

Another problem is incorrect record keeping. In order to have a chance to get compensation, you MUST have your records. And they must be complete, and in the right format.

Hip Replacement Recall 2012 – Is Your Hip Implant Failing You?

It’s 2012, and hip replacement recalls are all over the news. Is your hip implant failing you? Or has it failed several years ago?

Hip Replacement Recall 2012

Metal on Metal Hip Implant

The pain and suffering that hip implant patients go through whose implants are failing is almost unimaginable for people who have not been affected.

Imagine losing your most basic abilities that you normally take for granted. The ability to walk, and even to sit without pain. Or at all.

Some patients have suffered so much damage through faulty hip implants that they have been left with no hip at all. Not only are they in excruciating pain, but they’re basically immobilized.

Even in less drastic situations, a recall and a faulty implant means additional surgery, surgery that is very painful and takes a long time to recover from.

Hip Replacement Recall 2012 Update

There have not been any NEW recalls this year yet that I’m aware of, but there are plenty of recalled devices implanted in patients, many of whom are in pain.

And pain is not the only problem… Almost all the recalled hip implants are metal on metal implants, and in addition to being prone to failure at a miuch higher rate than the older, more traditional composite implants, they also pose the danger of metal poisoning or metal toxicity.

So if you have a metal on metal implant, you need to have your blood checked regularly for levels of the main heavy metals used in implants, cadmium and chromium.

The symptoms of heavy metal poisoning can be subtle, so they are not usually or at least not quickly recognized as having been caused by heavy metal poisoning. So it’s up to you to be vigilant.

This is going to be one of the key issues of hip replacement recall 2012.

And if you do have a metal on metal implant that is failing and/or affected by a recall? What do you do?

The most important thing is to get information – as soon as possible. Not only do you need to be in contact with your physician or medical team – you also need legal advice.

And you should seek that as soon as possible because there are a few mistakes that unsuspecting patients often make that can ruin your chances at compensation. So be sure not to make those mistakes.

Metal on Metal Hip Implants Cause Huge Problems

Metal on Metal Hip Implants have been causing huge problems for their recipients. And it’s not a big secret anymore.

Metal On Metal Hip Implants On NBC Nightly News

NBC Nightly News reported the situation earlier this month, and the US Drug Watchdog agrees. And it’s not just the DePuy ASR implants that are the culprits. Those were recalled last year, but not until after they were implanted in more than 40,000 or so Americans and about 92,000 patients worldwide.

As a result, tens of thousands of Americans and even more people around the world are at risk of serious problems.

Even the “Poster Lady” for DePuy’s ASR Resurfacing Implant, Penny Brown, a former gymnast, has now joined a group lawsuit to get compensated for her failing hip implant.

The DePuy Pinnacle implant, which is a metal on metal implant as well, is also implicated in having similar problems, not too surprisilngly.

What are those problems? These implants, along with similar metal on metal implants by other manufacturers, have shown a very high failure rate. Hip replacement implants are supposed to last at least 15 to 20 years, and preferably for the rest of the patient’s life.

Instead, the problematic metal on metal implants were failing within just a couple of years, leading to great pain, swelling, difficulty walking, and other problems. And that doesn’t even include the issue of metal toxicity that is also a big issue with these implants.

Metal On Metal Implant Solution – Another Big Problem

The solution is no less traumatic – more surgery. In fact, the fear of additional painful surgery may cause some affected patients to hesitate and wait with coming forward. Yet it’s important that they do so if they want help – and if they hope to get compensated for the pain and suffering that has been caused by their faulty implants.

It’s really ironic that the metal on metal implants were often chosen especially for younger and more athletic patients who were hoping to regain their old flexibility and mobility and return to their former athletic activities. Now, all too many of those patients are stuck with debilitating pain, and in some cases even the inability to walk normally.

The stealth problem of metal on metal implants that still gets far too little attention is however metal toxicity. The scary part is that metal toxicity doesn’t necessarily causes symptoms that would alert people to the issue, so it can be missed until the damage is done.

Even if people don’t suffer great pain, metal toxicity may be present, and it is essential that they get themselves checked for it – and seek information and hellp.
