You probably cringe at the mere thought of a repeat performance of that hip replacement surgery. Not something you want to go through again. But you may have no other choice. How can you find out?
First of all, you need to know for sure whether you are affected by the DePuy Hip Implant Recall. Or maybe by the Zimmer Hip Replacement Recall.
You may know the answer to that. Or maybe not. How would you be able to tell?
There is no one way to be sure…
Obviously, if you know you have one of the affected implants, you’ll know.
Maybe your doctor or surgeon has informed you that your hip implant has been involved in a recall. Maybe Johnson and Johnson has contacted you with the bad news.
Of ocurse, if your implant was one of the affected types, i.e., most notably the DePuy ASR XL implant, or possibly the Durom Cup Zimmer hip implant, which was recalled in 2008, you should see your doctor as soon as possible.
You should also see a lawyer, because there are a lot of things that can end up sabotaging your case… Seemingly little things like a few missing documents can cause big problems.
But back to the doctor’s visit for now. What’s the doctor going to do about it? And will you need more surgery?
Well, that depends…
If you’re in severe pain and/or your hip implant has loosened or otherwise seems to be failing, you probably won’t have much of a choice other than having surgery to have it replaced.
But there’s another potential problem that can be just as serious if not even more so…
One of the problems with the Depuy ASR XL hip implant is that its metal on metal construction leads to the release of metal particles into the surrounding tissue. And that leads to toxicity, which can cause a whole range of problems.
So even if you don’t have any symptoms yet, or you may have some that you don’t associate with your hip implant, you may have to have your implant replaced.
And there’s really no way to tell how bad it is until you have certain tests to find out to what degree you have been affected by such metal toxicity.
